This side event will show the outcomes of the 1st Subsidiary body on article 8J and how Indigenous Peoples’ traditional knowledge, innovations, and practices—recognized under Article 8(j) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)—are essential for implementing biodiversity commitments and strengthening climate action under the UNFCCC. Drawing from experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Africa and beyond, the session will highlight synergies between the CBD and UNFCCC processes.The discussion will emphasize the role of Indigenous Peoples in monitoring biodiversity, shaping adaptation and mitigation strategies, and ensuring that global frameworks uphold rights and responsibilities towards the planet earth.
