Living Forests of the North: Indigenous Adaptation and Stewardship in Boreal Siberia

Host Organisation:

Russian Indigenous Peopels Caucus

Description:

Boreal and Siberian forests are vital ecosystems that sustain the planet’s climate balance and support the livelihoods, cultures, and identities of Indigenous Peoples across the Russian North. This side event will explore how Indigenous communities are adapting to climate change and leading efforts to protect forest ecosystems through traditional knowledge, governance, and cooperation with national and international mechanisms. Through cases such as the Udege people and Bikin National Park, and Indigenous initiatives in Yakutia’s forest fire response, speakers will highlight how Indigenous knowledge and stewardship strengthen forest resilience and contribute to global climate goals. The discussion will also address the role of the Permanent Indigenous Peoples Committee (PIPC) — an advisory body to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) — in advancing Indigenous participation in forest management and decision-making. Indigenous speakers actively engaged in these processes will share lessons learned, strategies, and visions for the future of boreal forest stewardship.
