Recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ rights in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)

Although the international community progressively acknowledges Indigenous Peoples' contributions to climate action, their effective recognition in national climate governance remains marginal. National climate governance has been built primarily on voluntary pledges to the UNFCCC, which have been characterised by remaining more in intentions than in producing concrete results. Since 2016, these commitments have been organised as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), medium-term, country-driven climate action plans formulated within the context of bounded self-differentiation. In this event, we will analyse the recognition given to Indigenous Peoples in all the NDCs submitted between 2016 and May 2022. We will discuss whether the NDCs promote the effective engagement of Indigenous Peoples and analyse their implications concerning the strengthening of Indigenous Peoples' rights. We aim to promote a reflection on how to amplify Indigenous Peoples' presence in national climate governance and strengthen their advocacy, especially regarding the monitoring, reviewing, and verifying these commitments.
