Climate Change has resulted in weather patterns that are causing more frequent fires and extreme heat events. This coupled with changing land management practices has resulted in more intense and uncontrollable fires. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that traditional fire management (TFM) practices can help manage forests, protect biodiversity, prevent catastrophic fires all while helping to mitigate climate change and strengthen sustainable livelihoods for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Acknowledging this growing evidence base, this side event will showcase grassroots experiences in revitalizing fire knowledge while recognizing the opportunities to strengthen the implementation of these methodologies in other parts of the world. The side event will specifically: 1. provide an overview of traditional fire management 2. showcase local experiences 3. present the latest science on traditional fire management and climate change mitigation 4. provide a platform to discuss gaps and opportunities to strengthen the implementation of TFM 5. foster wider discussions on the role of IPLCs in climate change mitigation initiatives
